Hello Dieter, thanks for your question. Insert it when the penis is not erect or at most only half-erect. With an erection, the urethra is tense and narrower, the tissue gives less, and that is exactly when injuries happen if you force it. Soft and relaxed, the curved shaft glides down by its own weight, and you can feel the balls as they pass without having to push. Three things are more important than the technique. First, hygiene: boil stainless steel before and after each use or disinfect it with a toy cleaner, wash your hands, and do not share the dilator. Second, use plenty of water-based lubricant, ideally a sterile lubricant gel, on the dilator and at the urethral opening; being too sparing is the most common mistake here. Third: never press or push against resistance. If it gets stuck, hurts, or bleeds, pull it back out slowly and try again another time. Take your time and do it calmly, sitting or lying down. Afterwards, urinate once, that flushes the urethra. Do not use it at all if you already have a urinary tract infection. And if the burning lasts longer than a day, there is blood in the urine, or fever is added, please see a doctor.
