A vibrator is a sex toy that gives pleasure through vibrations you can adjust. It has a small motor inside, with a rechargeable battery or replaceable batteries, and almost all have several intensities and patterns. It is used externally, on the clitoris, nipples or penis, or internally, in the vagina, alone or with a partner. It helps you find out what stimulation you like and, with a partner, adds variety.
Owning one is very common. According to two Indiana University studies published in 2009 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 53% of women (Herbenick et al., 2009, J Sex Med) and 45% of men (Reece et al., 2009, J Sex Med) in the United States had used a vibrator at some point.
There is a type for every area you want to stimulate, and each has its own page.
In the Indiana University study of women, a survey of 2,056 Americans aged 18 to 60 (the exact rate of use was 52.5%), using a vibrator was associated with better sexual function: more desire, arousal, lubrication and orgasms. Those who had used one recently scored higher on most of the aspects measured (Herbenick et al., 2009, J Sex Med). It is an association, not proof that the vibrator is the cause.
It is not unusual among men either. In the Indiana study of men, a representative survey of 1,047 men aged 18 to 60, the exact figure was 44.8%, alone or with a partner, and 10% had used one in the past month (Reece et al., 2009, J Sex Med). In another representative US survey, 43.8% of heterosexual men had used a vibrator at some point, mostly during sex with a female partner (Reece et al., 2010, J Sex Marital Ther). And among 25,294 gay and bisexual men surveyed, it was 49.6% (Rosenberger et al., 2012, Arch Sex Behav).
With a partner, most of the women who used a vibrator in a survey of 2,056 women said they felt comfortable using it with their partner (Herbenick et al., 2010, J Sex Marital Ther). In another, with 3,017 women, 69.7% said they reach orgasm more often, or enjoy penetration more, when they or their partner stimulate the clitoris at the same time with a finger or a toy (Hensel et al., 2021, PLoS One).
On their own, in a study with 27,931 participants, the highest orgasm frequencies were associated with stimulating the clitoris with a vibrator or dildo, with watching porn or erotica and with stimulating it by hand (Hewings-Martin et al., 2026, Arch Sex Behav). All of these studies record what people report and what things go together; none proves that the vibrator is the cause.
We counted what the listings in this category state in October 2026. Of those that give the material, nine in ten contain silicone: six in ten are silicone only and almost three in ten combine it with ABS plastic. TPE and TPR, softer but porous, account for less than one in ten.
Of those that say something about water, two in three state “Fully waterproof (submersible)” and almost one in three “Water-resistant (not submersible)”; a few are splashproof only. When the protection rating is given, the most common is IPX7.
Almost four in five vibrators are rechargeable and the rest take batteries, mostly AAA. When the listing gives the run time, in four in five it is between one and three hours of use (the most common is two), and charging usually takes another two. Three in four have between 7 and 12 vibration modes. Very few listings state the noise level: those that do range from 50 to 68 dB.
Among those that are inserted and give the size, more than half have 10 to 14 cm of insertable length; one in four is under 10 and almost one in five is over 14. In diameter, two in three are between 3 and 4 cm and only one in six is over 4.
Charge it fully or put in new batteries, and wash it before first use. Start on the lowest intensity and externally, without going straight to the clitoris: try the thighs and the labia first and move closer gradually. Use a little water-based lubricant, externally too. Move it, hold it still, press more or less and change mode until you find what you like. If it is inserted, do it slowly and only when you feel ready.
The most common mistakes are starting at full intensity, using it without lubricant, putting silicone lubricant on a silicone vibrator, taking a splashproof-only one into the shower, storing it damp or touching other toys, and choosing a first one for being big rather than comfortable.
Water-based lubricant works with any vibrator. Silicone-based lubricant only if yours is entirely ABS plastic, metal or glass.
You can put a condom on a vibrator: it is useful for sharing it, for moving from one area to another without stopping to wash it, and with porous materials such as TPE or TPR. If the condom is latex, do not combine it with oils or oil-based lubricants, because they damage it; if you are allergic to latex, there are latex-free condoms.
Store it clean and dry, in its pouch or a cloth bag and away from other toys. Dry the charging port before charging and, if it takes batteries, remove them if you will not use it for a while.
For anal use, only use vibrators with a wide base: the anus has no stop and a toy without a base can slip inside. Those designed for this are in anal toys. If you go from anal to vaginal use, wash it first or change the condom. If more than one person uses it, use a new condom for each: in a study in Mexico of 324 men with HIV who have sex with men, sharing sex toys was an independent risk factor for hepatitis C (Mata-Marín et al., 2022, PLoS One).
If you notice pain, stinging or numbness, stop and rest. With a wound or an infection, wait until you are well.
If you want penetration without vibration, that is a dildo: in its classic form it has no motor and you set the rhythm with your hand. There are dildo-shaped vibrators, straight or realistic, that do both. If direct vibration on the clitoris is too much, a suction toy stimulates it with air pulses, without touching. To work the pelvic floor, many people use Kegel balls. And if you are looking for something for both of you that is not a vibrator, there are more ideas in sex toys for couples.
To start, you do not need to spend a lot. Small external vibrators, the simplest to use, are found mostly in the budget range, and they do the same as a more expensive one: a motor and several intensities.
If in doubt, start with a small external one. The number of modes does not rise with the price, and with the lowest intensity and a little water-based lubricant you have more than enough to find out what you like before moving up a range.
A small external one, such as a mini vibrator or a bullet: they are simple, discreet and help you find out what you like. If you prefer to start internally, choose a slim silicone one.
Externally, clitoral vibrators, suction toys, wands and bullets; internally, G-spot vibrators and eggs; for both areas at once, rabbits. For two, couples vibrators and those with a remote or app.
It is a rest-on vibrator, wide and flat, used externally and not inserted. They are among the clitoral vibrators.
The motor. A vibrator vibrates and a dildo, in its classic form, does not. Some vibrators are dildo-shaped and do both.
Yes. For the penis there are masturbators with vibration and vibrating rings, and for the prostate, massagers with a wide base.
Rechargeable if you will use it often: you do not have to buy batteries and it is usually more powerful. Battery-powered if you want something inexpensive to try.
Between one and three hours of use in most of those that state it, with about two hours of charging. Look for “Run time” and “Charging time” in the listing.
That it can go in the water. If the listing says it is splashproof, it withstands a little wetting when washed, but it cannot be submerged. When the manufacturer gives the protection rating, submersible ones are IPX7 or IPX8.
It depends on the model. If the manufacturer publishes the figure, the listing gives it as “Noise level”, in decibels: the lower it is, the less you hear.
With silicone toys, water-based lubricant. Silicone-based ones can damage the surface of a silicone toy.
Yes, if they are made of a non-porous material (silicone, ABS plastic, metal or glass) and you clean them properly. Check the material in the listing.
Yes. There are vibrators designed for two, for use during penetration or with a remote. According to the brand We-Vibe (2022), 78% of couples who tried one of its vibrators said it helped them experiment more together.
With warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, before and after use, and leave it to air dry. Do not boil it: it has a motor and battery. If it is not submersible, do not put the whole thing in water.
There is no evidence that using them often causes permanent loss of sensitivity. If one day the area feels less sensitive, a few days of rest is usually enough.
To start, little: a budget mini vibrator or bullet is enough to find out what you like. Moving up a range makes sense when you know which area and sensation you prefer, not before.
Not because it is cheap, but depending on the material. Silicone, ABS plastic, metal and glass are not porous; TPE and TPR are, and need more thorough cleaning. Check the material in the listing, especially on the cheaper ones.
Charge it fully, wash it and start on the lowest intensity and externally: try the thighs and the labia first and move closer gradually, with a little water-based lubricant. Increase the level only if you feel like it.
Just a few. The number of modes does not rise with the price, so it is no reason to pay more. What matters is that it has a low intensity.
It is not necessary. What rises with the price is not the mechanism, which is the same. If after trying a simple one you know what you want, then it makes sense to look at a higher range.
Both are small, external and budget-range; choose whichever feels more comfortable in your hand.
